Despite your best efforts by brushing and flossing twice a day and seeing the dentist regularly for exams and professional cleanings, you have received the news that you need a cavity filled. Cavities are treated by first removing the decayed area of the tooth, typically with a drill, then filling the hole to prevent further decay of the natural tooth. Cavities can be found in both children and adults with treatment being the same regardless of age. In the Macomb County dental office of Alan F. Robinson DDS, PC we utilize two different filling materials; composite or tooth colored and amalgam or silver.

Once Alan F. Robinson DDS, PC has performed a thorough examination and discussed finding a cavity that needs filling, he will discuss treatment options. In our Macomb County dental office, we utilize state-of-the-art tooth colored material for our composite fillings. The material is a mixture of glass or quartz filler in resin and allows Dr. Robinson to remove less tooth structure to prepare the tooth. This method may allow the dentist to create a smaller filling than with amalgam. However, the cost is a higher and the procedure can take longer to complete than with an amalgam. The materials used to create an amalgam filling include a stable alloy of elemental mercury, silver, tin, copper and may include other metallic elements. Amalgam fillings are extremely strong and may be preferred for molars which perform chewing and put the most stress on the filling. The disadvantages to this material may include possible sensitivity to hot or cold and the visible silver color of the material.
